Tools for Humanity builds Worldcoin, a crypto project co‑founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman that aims to create a global ID, a global currency and an app enabling payments, purchases and transfers using its token alongside other cryptocurrencies and traditional assets. The project uses a five‑pound chromatic sphere called the Orb to scan irises and generate an anonymized "iris code"—the original biometric is reportedly destroyed by default—prompting privacy concerns. Worldcoin is in beta testing and has onboarded about two million users across five continents. Investors including Blockchain Capital, a16z, Bain Capital Crypto and Distributed Global believe the World App could become a major onramp to crypto and a widely adopted crypto wallet. The company plans to expand the Worldcoin project and application and invest in research and development and bot detection. Despite public scrutiny over biometric collection, Worldcoin continues to attract substantial venture capital.
