Touch Surgery offers an interactive mobile and tablet surgical simulator designed by qualified surgeons to help trainee and practicing surgeons learn, rehearse and test procedures. The app breaks complex operations into component steps, allows users to ‘perform’ each stage on a device and awards scores for accuracy and knowledge. Content covers a range of operations from heart surgery to carpal tunnel release and is authored by leading specialists to disseminate best techniques. The company says it is creating accurate surgical content using sophisticated technology to improve quality of surgery worldwide. Touch Surgery plans to use recently raised funds to launch an augmented reality tool that trains medics on finer points of surgery. Its stated mission highlights global need—citing 5 billion people without access to safe surgical services and that surgical disease causes more deaths worldwide than HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria combined. Touch Surgery builds mobile apps that deliver 3D-rendered, procedure-by-procedure training modules for medical students and practicing surgeons. The apps run on Android and iOS and currently cover more than 75 surgical procedures. The company reports more than 1.5 million users worldwide, which it describes as the world’s largest digital surgical community. Touch Surgery has raised more than $10 million from investors including Balderton Capital and Redline Capital. It recently signed a strategic collaboration with Johnson & Johnson’s medical devices subsidiary Ethicon. Founders Andre Chow and Jean Nehme say the company aims to scale surgical training globally and to apply its technology back into the operative environment.
