Overview
TouchType is a London-based developer of SwiftKey, an Android "social keyboard" app that leverages the company's Fluency natural-language engine to learn a user's writing style and improve text prediction and correction. SwiftKey is designed to reduce the number of keystrokes and speed up text entry on smartphones and tablets. The app has been downloaded more than 3.5 million times. TouchType raised $2.4 million (£1.5M) in a Series A to support growth. The company says it will use the capital to enhance its products, strengthen executive, commercial and technical teams, and increase its worldwide presence, particularly in the US and Asia. TouchType builds SwiftKey, an AI-powered Android keyboard that uses the company's Fluency prediction engine to learn a user's writing style and predict words. The app personalizes predictions by analyzing current typing and prior content stored on the phone and offers simultaneous bilingual prediction for two languages. New features in the release include voice-to-text, multi-touch support, an improved keyboard layout (number-pad, arrow keys, easier symbol access), and broader prediction in browser/search. The public beta generated 250,000 downloads, which the company says made it the most downloaded keyboard in the Android Market. SwiftKey is available in US and UK English, Spanish, German, French, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch and Swedish, and is moving from a free public beta to a paid release (initially $0.99 until September 30, then $3.99). TouchType announced $1.25 million in funding in a third round led by Octopus Ventures and the Cambridge Capital Group.
