Tres Amigas is building the Tres Amigas SuperStation, a high-capacity renewable energy hub designed to interconnect the Eastern, Western and Texas grids and enable market-based dispatch and cross-region transfers of power. The SuperStation uses information technology to coordinate dispatch and to create firm, reliable renewable power from intermittent sources such as wind and solar. The project is being planned in stages with a total buildout cost cited at $1.5 billion; Phase I engineering is underway, construction was scheduled to begin in 2012, and Phase I commercial operations were scheduled for 2015. Initial power transfer capacity for Phase I is planned at 750 MW between the Western and Eastern grids. The company says the hub will allow energy producers and purchasers to access new regional markets and provide value-added services to intermittent generators and storage. Financially, the company announced a $12 million equity investment from Mitsui & Co., Ltd. tied to the project buildout and commercialization plans.
