Tribogenics

5440 McConnell Ave, Los Angeles, CA, 90066, United States

Overview

Tribogenics invented a triboluminescence‑based X‑ray source and commercialized Watson handheld XRF analyzers that perform non‑destructive testing and positive materials identification (PMI). The company’s X‑ray method generates X‑rays without a high‑voltage power supply by using a triboelectric effect and was perfected with scientists at UCLA. Twelve international patents protect the technology. Tribogenics launched its first industrial products in August of last year, initially targeting scrap metal recycling, metal fabrication, machining and manufacturing for aerospace, automotive, medical, military, scientific and industrial customers. Watson is positioned as the industry’s first sub‑$10,000 handheld XRF analyzer. Based in Los Angeles, the company plans to expand sales channels and grow its presence in the non‑destructive testing market with Nikon’s support, including handheld XRF, cabinet‑type X‑ray and CT products. Tribogenics develops small, innovative X-ray sources intended for compact XRF devices. The company closed a $6.2M Series A to advance its new X-ray source technology. It plans to use the funds to hire additional engineers and scientists and expand the size of its internal R&D facility. Tribogenics previously raised $2.5M from Flywheel Ventures and other angel investors. Led by President and CEO Dale Fox, the company is identifying industry partners to co-develop the first commercial products based on the technology. It aims to launch its lineup of small X-ray sources in 2013. Tribogenics is a Marina Del Rey, California–based developer of technology that enables miniature low-cost X-ray sources. Its X-ray sources target scientific instruments, security screening and medical devices and are being developed for mining, industrial, military and medical imaging applications. The underlying technology was discovered at UCLA and has received prior funding from DARPA and other agencies. Founded in 2009 and led by CSO Dr. Carlos Camara and newly appointed CEO Dale Fox, the company plans to commercialize its X-ray technology. Tribogenics has raised $2.5M in funding from Flywheel Ventures and undisclosed angel investors. The company intends to use the funding to advance commercialization of its products.
