Triposo
Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, The Netherlands
Overview
Triposo was launched by ex-Googlers Jon Tirsen and Douwe Osinga as a mobile travel platform that algorithmically aggregates public destination data to produce personalized recommendations. The app draws on sources like Wikitravel and OpenStreetMap to surface relevant suggestions with minimal user effort. Since launch it has amassed nearly two million downloads and strong ratings on iOS and Android. The product adjusts recommendations by location, time of day, weather, and business hours and the team recently released an updated iOS app that acts as a “self-starter.” Founders say they are developing a larger “version 2” expected around the first of August. Triposo plans to use new capital to grow its engineering team and to move into new headquarters in Berlin. Triposo, founded by ex-Googlers Jon Tirsen and Douwe Osinga, builds algorithmic travel guides by aggregating content from sources such as Wikipedia, Wikitravel and OpenStreetMap. The product ranks sightseeing, nightlife and restaurant information using proprietary algorithms and a collection of millions of geotagged photos to gauge location importance. Triposo offers free mobile apps with offline-enabled maps and has published 30 free iOS destination guides; Android already has a world guide and select city guides, and an iOS world guide was planned for release next month. Users engage with the guides for about 20 minutes per session on average. The company raised $525,000 in seed financing from angel investors to continue product development. Triposo intends to use the funds to optimize its ranking algorithms while exploring future revenue models such as premium features or paid apps.
