Overview

Truepic builds provenance-based media authentication software that cryptographically secures photos and videos at capture using a software camera on mobile devices, producing trusted metadata (time, date, location) and resisting post-capture tampering. The company holds 13 patents for its “secure” camera technology and says its approach proves what is real rather than detecting fakes after the fact. Its products include Truepic Vision, a platform for requesting and reviewing trusted media, and an upcoming integration product, Truepic Lens, to enable trusted capture within third-party apps. Truepic’s technology is used by over 100 enterprises—including Equifax, EXL Service, Ford, Accion Opportunity Fund and Palomar—and has found traction in insurance, banking, automotive, marketplaces and other industries. The company reported revenue growth of over 300% last year but declined to disclose absolute revenue figures and is intentionally not yet profitable while prioritizing distribution and product rollout. Truepic is headquartered in San Diego and was founded in 2015. Truepic provides an iOS/Android app and an embeddable SDK that verifies images at capture, watermarks them with a timestamp, geocode, URL and six-digit code, and stores a vault copy on secure servers with a spot on an immutable blockchain. Viewers can follow the watermark URL to compare the posted image with the vault copy to confirm it hasn’t been modified. The technology is being used for Reddit r/IAmA verifications and pitched for dating profiles, peer-to-peer e-commerce listings and other identity/claim verification use cases. Truepic has also partnered with NGOs such as the Syrian American Medical Society and worked with the Human Rights Foundation to train humanitarian leaders. The company says it will invest in offline image and video forensic analysis to detect AI-generated deepfakes, using techniques that analyze hair, ears, eye reflectivity and other subtle frame-level details. Truepic announced an $8M Series A round that brings its total funding to $10.5M. Truepic provides a consumer iOS/Android app and an embeddable SDK that verifies photos and videos using patented technology, watermarks them with timestamps, geocodes and metadata, and stores a copy in a digital vault with a six-digit code and URL. The service can optionally use blockchain to create distributed copies of the verification data. Clients can embed Truepic’s lightweight Enterprise SDK so capture, verification and sharing happen inside their products; clients pay a monthly fee for that capability. Truepic has a dozen beta SDK customers ranging from Fortune 500 insurance carriers to top beauty brands and people are already uploading verified images on platforms like Tinder and Airbnb. Co-founder and COO Craig Stack and CEO Jeff McGregor are positioning the product for both consumer viral growth (via watermarked shares) and enterprise adoption as a third-party certification service. The company announced a $1.75M seed raise to fund hiring and push the enterprise SDK to public launch as it ramps up sales.
