Overview
TruTag Technologies develops microscopic, edible barcodes called TruTags made from nano-porous silica that has received GRAS notice from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. TruTags can be placed directly on products or in packaging and are read with hyperspectral imaging to provide manufacturing origin, lot numbers, authorized distributors and safe-use information in one to five seconds. The company targets industries prone to counterfeiting such as pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, food, cannabis and vaping, and is close to market in the CBD space. Clients include PwC, which uses TruTag’s technology in its Food Trust Platform for Australian beef exports. TruTag highlights advantages over specialized symbols, inks and holograms due to edibility, direct product placement and instant authentication. Financially, TruTag has raised $25 million to date, including the new $7.5 million Series C, and will use the latest funding to further commercialize its technology and develop new solutions. TruTag Technologies develops ingestible, dust-sized microtags that embed millions of optical patterns for covert on-dose and on-product authentication. The TruTags are inert and edible and can be integrated into products without packaging or labels to enable field-reading of finished tablets and other goods for provenance, lot, site and date information. Use cases cited include food, drugs, electronics, consumer products, and industrial components, with applications in brand protection, traceability, logistics, and product quality assurance. TruTag is working with WuXi PharmaTech to explore deployment of an on-dose authentication solution for WuXi's pharmaceutical customers. The company is a SKAI Ventures portfolio company and was selected as a 2014 Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum. The announcement was issued from Honolulu, HI.
