Overview
TurningArt operates a Netflix-esque art rental service that lets customers browse thousands of independent works and rent framed prints for $10 a month. Prints arrive framed and ready to hang, and renters earn credit toward purchases if they decide to buy originals, which range from $50 to $5,000. The company shares the lion’s share of sales with artists and also gives artists a portion of subscription revenue, attracting hundreds of artists to the platform. TurningArt says thousands of consumers now use its service and the company has seen a 350% increase in its customer base this year. With more than $2M in outside funding to date, it plans to expand its artwork collection, build its core team, and introduce new delivery options. TurningArt offers a subscription service that lets customers rotate framed prints of contemporary artists in their home or office. Customers build a queue of artwork, choose how often pieces are shipped, and can rotate pieces for as long as they like. Subscribers can purchase any piece and every dollar spent on the subscription can be applied toward a purchase. Subscriptions start at $9.99 per month; all pieces on the site are currently 17 by 21 inches, come framed, and prices range from $50 to $5,000. The company launched in August 2010 and says it plans to expand to larger formats soon. TurningArt positions itself as a Netflix-like model for artwork to let buyers see pieces in their space before committing to buy.
