Twigmore is a travel network built directly on Facebook that emphasizes people over places by connecting travelers with trusted locals through friends and friends-of-friends. The product lets users discover local contacts, see shared interests via Facebook profiles, get introductions, and receive notifications when friends will be in the same city. Twigmore has begun adding curated recommendations and commercial partnerships, starting with Groupon Deals available in 100+ U.S. destinations. The team envisions expanding into trust-based homestays similar to Airbnb but limited to friends and friends-of-friends. Founded in October 2009 in New York City by Stephen Smyth (formerly of Thomson Reuters) and Peter Baer (formerly of Warner Brothers), the startup has built a database of over 1.7 million local contacts across more than 38,000 cities during beta. Financially, Twigmore has raised $275,000 to date from angel investors.
