Overview
Twones rebuilt its original FriendFeed-style music-aggregation product into a Delicious-meets-StumbleUpon service focused on discovery and bookmarking. Its core product is the "Music Bar," a browser add-on/bookmarklet that lets users bookmark music playing on other sites, manage a virtual collection in a sidebar, and share tracks to Twitter and Facebook. The Music Bar debuted as a Firefox extension with Chrome and Internet Explorer versions near completion, and an "Explore" feature lets users jump to random tracks in Twones' database without installing the add-on. Streams can be scrobbled to Last.fm, and the company supports bookmarking on thousands of sites and MP3 blogs. Twones acknowledges a risk that bookmarked tracks may disappear if their external sources vanish and says it is working on ways to mitigate that issue. The startup plans to monetize via advertising, affiliate revenues, a possible premium version, or an analytics service, and says its earlier $500k seed funding gives it runway while remaining cost-efficient because it does not store large amounts of music or run complex CDN/license deals.
