Unearth, founded in 2016 and based in Seattle, evolved its OnePlaceTM software into a simple GIS platform with broad horizontal appeal. The platform brings siloed GIS data to distributed field teams via an easy map-based interface, simplifying GIS workflows for both office and field users. Unearth began by improving productivity in construction and has expanded into the broader built world, gaining customers in utilities, government, infrastructure, and energy. The company emphasizes an intuitively accessible design that lets teams annotate, share, and discuss aerial maps without intensive training or costly custom apps. Financially, Unearth has raised a total of $11.6 million, including the $7 million Series A announced in this round. With the new funding, the company plans to expand go-to-market efforts and build out its engineering team to more quickly develop niche industry solutions. Unearth is a Seattle-based provider of construction software founded by long-time technology executives Brian Saab, Amy Hutchins and Nate Miller. It has just launched OnePlace, a construction software platform that brings together real-time construction data — aerial and ground photography, site maps, blueprints, and drone surveys — to create a live and transparent record of build progress accessible from any browser on any device. OnePlace is designed for horizontal and vertical construction on large-scale commercial and civil projects. The platform enables real-time collaboration that improves alignment among landowners, general contractors, subcontractors, and regulatory agencies for transparent communication on day-to-day activities and unexpected issues. Unearth raised $3m in funding in a round led by Madrona Venture Group with participation from Vulcan Capital. As part of the financing, Madrona managing director S. Somasegar will join Unearth’s board of directors. Unearth is developing a platform that combines drone imagery, remote sensors, and IoT concepts to create a single place for construction teams to communicate and share accurate project information. The product ingests both broad contextual data and granular field-level details to provide a rich information dashboard and streamline decision-making among general contractors, landowners, and subcontractors. The product is currently in testing and the company expects to release it in the first quarter of next year. Unearth will use the recent funding to hire additional engineers and accelerate product development. The startup has five employees, many of whom previously worked with CEO Brian Saab at Buuteeq; Saab is a former Microsoft manager and Buuteeq was acquired by Priceline. The company operates from an office in Seattle’s Fremont neighborhood and its co-founders are licensed commercial drone operators.
