University Startups offers programs that teach startup skills, college counseling and job-readiness to high school and college students, and runs a mentorship program for community college pupils. The company partners with nonprofits, school districts and community colleges and has collaborated with professors from Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, University of Maryland, University of Pennsylvania and Syracuse University. Founded in 2020 and based in Gaithersburg, Maryland, the 20-person startup says it helped about 2,500 students this year. It has been funded by Maryland’s TEDCO and was selected for the first DC cohort of the Techstars accelerator. With support from TEDCO and Techstars the company has built out partnerships and program delivery aimed at students from underrepresented backgrounds. The founders plan to continue scaling the programs and are preparing for another raise at the end of 2023.
