Upstash builds a serverless data platform for developers, offering consumption-based pricing for Redis and Kafka. The platform aims to reduce infrastructure costs by charging only for requests and by balancing data between memory and disk to lower pricing. It supports hundreds of Redis databases and Kafka clusters while charging zero when databases are idle. Upstash launched at the end of 2020, is based in Turkey, and reports more than 13,000 developers using the product. There is a free tier up to 10,000 requests per day and an enterprise tier for customers exceeding 1,000 commits per second; currently only a small percentage of users are paying. Founder Enes Akar is weighing whether to focus on developers and SMBs or pursue larger enterprise customers; the company has seven engineers and plans to grow headcount this year and next.
