Overview
UWI Technology develops the UWI Label, a microfluidic elapsed-time indicator that can show whether food is safe to consume and reduce risk and downtime in workplaces. The company has extended the label’s application beyond food and drink into aerospace, life sciences, medical and engineering sectors, targeting products with critical lifespans such as chemical reagents, glues, sealants, aircraft paints and composites. UWI is developing a hybrid label capable of monitoring temperature, pressure and humidity, sending text or email warnings and communicating with other labels or devices, positioning it within the Internet of Things. Product trials are planned with leading companies across these sectors in early 2015. UWI secured over £1.26 million from Angel Syndicate, Aero-Den, the Scottish Investment Bank and UK private investors to help drive its next phase of growth. Pete Higgins, the company’s CEO and founder, invented the UWI Label, and Douglas Cribbes serves as chairman. In 2012 UWI became the first Scotland-based company to receive investment from the North American Angel Syndicate Aero-Den and the first to receive the full £250,000 from the Scottish Investment Bank’s Scottish Seed Fund in one tranche. UWI Label has developed technology that warns when products in sectors such as medicines, aerospace, cosmetics and food and drink are about to expire. The company is led by founder and CEO Pete Higgins and is based in Edinburgh, Scotland, UK. Reported 16 October 2012, UWI Label raised £572k in funding. Backers include Scottish Enterprise, AeroDen (a US private investor syndicate including Chairman Douglas Cribbes) and two UK-based private investors. The company intends to use the capital to accelerate product development.
