Overview
Valimail provides a platform to validate sender identity for both inbound and outbound email, helping enterprises and their customers trust email communications. Its solution pairs with existing email security products to provide protection against phishing. The company has expanded its network of VARs, SIs, and email security vendors and has a global partnership with Symantec to sell a joint email authentication solution. Valimail also partnered with Microsoft to offer an email visibility product for Office 365 customers. Led by CEO and co-founder Alexander García-Tobar, the company intends to use new funding to accelerate product offering expansion, partnerships, and global presence. To date the company has raised $84M in total funding. Valimail provides an email authentication service that uses standards like SPF, DKIM and DMARC to prevent impersonation. The company automates the setup and management of those standards and promises to handle related hassles. Its service is used by customers including Yelp, Uber, Fanni Mae and WeWork; WeWork’s VP of information security said Valimail’s automation “eliminates the need for two FTEs.” Valimail CEO and co-founder Alexander Garcia-Tobar said authentication is “at the root of trusted communications.” The company notes that DMARC is now supported by over 5 billion inboxes and that domain owners have published more DMARC records in the last six months than in the five previous years combined; all federal agencies must implement the standard. Valimail has raised a $25M Series B, bringing total funding to $38.5M, including a $12M Series A in 2016. ValiMail offers an automated email authentication platform that helps enterprises implement and manage DMARC and related protocols to prevent domain spoofing and phishing. The service gives customers visibility into internal and external email usage and automates policy management through a user interface. The company authenticates about 1.5 billion emails per month, has roughly two dozen clients in production, and says it has protected those clients from 40 million phishing emails; its marketing claim of “enables automated email authentication for 2.7 billion inboxes” is presented in the article as an exaggeration. Financially, ValiMail reached profitability in early 2016 and had about 18 months of runway when it chose to raise the new round. The company plans to use the funding to continue developing its technology platform, build out its API to become more of an ecosystem play, educate the market about email authentication, and onboard and service new clients. ValiMail currently has fewer than 20 employees and plans to triple headcount over the next 16 months.
