Vän Robotics combines artificial intelligence and proven teaching techniques into friendly, approachable robots; its initial product is ABii. ABii complements classroom learning or facilitates learning at home and is described as the first artificial intelligence tutor, created by Laura Boccanfuso, Ph.D., based on ten years of research at the University of South Carolina and Yale University. The company was accepted into SCRA’s SC Launch entrepreneurial program in January 2017 and used three SCRA grants to build and test a prototype and conduct larger consumer tests. Vän Robotics conducted field testing in schools and collected customer feedback from teachers, parents, and students. SCRA’s $200,000 SC Launch, Inc. investment will fund an engineering redesign and the manufacture of the company's first 700 consumer robots. The company plans to launch sales to schools and consumers at home once the commercially-ready robots are manufactured.
