Vanhawks develops the Valour smartbike and a software platform for connected bikes. The Valour includes built-in turn-by-turn navigation, blind-spot detection, speed tracking, road condition reports, distance and elevation metrics, crowdsourced route planning and anti-theft tracking. The company raised over $820,000 on Kickstarter and recently secured $1.6M to fund production and deliveries. The new capital will help address manufacturing challenges in Taiwan and enable shipping in batches of 25–50 bikes starting this spring to work through a backlog by summer. Management frames the business as the software layer for the bike industry and aims to become a category leader in bike-based software beyond hardware sales. Vanhawks is part of Y Combinator’s Winter 2015 class.
