Vaunte operates a web platform that lets notable people display items from their closets and put them up for sale, initially as a consignment marketplace. The company began as a consignment market taking a 30% commission for photographing and shipping sellers' items and has since added sales of new versions of featured items. Vaunte launched in November 2012 and, based largely on word of mouth and press, has grown to 60,000 members and more than $500,000 in transactional revenue. The team is nine people and is moving into a 6,000 square foot Manhattan space for office and inventory storage. Vaunte plans to launch a mobile app to open the platform to the general public, charging lower commissions for users who take their own photos. To scale that model it is building technology for photo quality control and systems to verify the authenticity of luxury items.
