VAXIMM was formed in 2008 as a joint venture of BB Biotech Ventures and Merck KGaA and is based in Basel, Switzerland, with a Mannheim, Germany subsidiary, Vaximm GmbH. The company focuses on developing vaccines for cancer patients, with lead program VXM01, an investigational oral T‑cell vaccine that targets the tumor vasculature. Preclinical animal studies have shown anti-tumor activity of VXM01 across various tumor types. VAXIMM closed a CHF7.8M financing round and intends to use the funds to advance VXM01 into and through clinical Phase I testing. Human clinical trials of the vaccine were expected to start in 2011. As part of the financing, Dr. Sten Verland (Sunstone Capital) and Dr. Gerhard Ries (BioMedPartners) will join the board alongside chairman Dr. Klaus Breiner.
