Vertical Oceans develops large vertical “aqua towers” that incubate and grow shrimp indoors without chemicals or antibiotics, enabling out-of-season production in urban locations. The company positions its product as tasting like fresh wild-caught shrimp and commands a higher price that the founders say offsets the costs of vertical urban production. Vertical Oceans has run a small proof-of-concept facility in Singapore and completed 10 harvests in the past six months to demonstrate the core biological concept. The startup is expanding into a new facility adjacent to downtown Singapore to develop its technologies at full scale. The founders, John Diener and Enzo Acerbi, previously worked together at an insect protein company and bring experience in scaling agritech. The company emerged from the IndieBio accelerator and targets the global $50 billion shrimp market.
