Vfunction provides a platform that automates breaking monolithic Java applications into microservices to expedite cloud-native modernization. The company split its offering into two products: the Vfunction management platform for estate assessment and the Vfunction application transformation engine for code transformation. Customers deploy a JVM agent that sends data for human-architect-reviewed recommendations; the platform uses supervised learning, graph theory, and clustering to identify redundancies and untether dependencies. Typical customers are large enterprises in financial services, automotive, telco, media, and government, and it has attracted major clients such as Intesa Sanpaolo. The Palo Alto–based company exited stealth in February with $12M in seed funding and has now raised additional capital. Vfunction plans to invest the new funding in global growth beyond North America and Europe. Vfunction provides a platform that automates decomposition of legacy monolithic applications into cloud-native microservices, deploying locally with a JVM agent that sends data to a central server where architects design target services. The platform generates service specification files which an automation engine uses to copy relevant code artifacts to create new services. Vfunction leverages supervised learning, graph theory, and clustering algorithms to identify dead code and code anomalies, while keeping the human architect in control to modify or override recommendations. The company says its automation can make decomposition up to 15x faster and achieve 80–95% automation depending on the application and target architecture. During stealth it secured six- and seven-figure deals with leading banks and disclosed Italy's Intesa Sanpaolo as a paying customer. At launch Vfunction is focused on Java (JVM) with plans to support additional languages and platforms over time; the company was founded in 2017.
