Overview
VHX operates an online digital distribution platform that enables artists to sell video content directly from their own websites and connect with fans. The platform hosts over 3,500 titles and has generated $4.7M in total sales. The company employs 20 people. VHX plans to use the new funding to expand its platform. VHX raised $5M in a Series B led by Comcast Ventures. Union Square Ventures, Keith Calder, Lerer-Hippeau Ventures, Lowercase Capital and Alexis Ohanian also participated. Founded in 2000 and based in New York, Comcast Ventures’ Sam Landman joined VHX’s board in conjunction with the funding. VHX is a New York City-based distribution platform founded in 2011 by Casey Pugh and Jamie Wilkinson that provides publishing tools for creators to sell videos from their own websites. Its platform has been used by artists such as Aziz Ansari, Dave Grohl, Shane Carruth and Ira Glass to release films, shorts, serials, collections and educational videos. Over the last year the company has worked with partners including Drafthouse Films, Sundance Institute, the Kickstarter Film Festival and Vice Media. In August 2013 VHX raised $3.2M in a Series A financing led by Union Square Ventures with participation from existing backers Lerer Ventures, Lowercase Capital and Alexis Ohanian and new investors including William Morris Endeavor, John Maloney and Gunderson Dittmer. In conjunction with the funding, Union Square Ventures’ Andy Weissman joined VHX’s board. The company intends to use the funds to grow the team, open up its publishing platform and launch apps for numerous devices. VHX provides a platform that helps independent artists and creators sell and distribute video content directly to fans, offering DRM-free streaming and downloads in multiple formats and customizable, branded user experiences. The company has powered high-profile direct releases, including Aziz Ansari’s Dangerously Delicious (sold for $5) and Indie Game: The Movie (sold for $9.99). Founders Casey Pugh and Jamie Wilkinson built the product to let creators avoid traditional distributors and platform restrictions like DRM and standardized storefronts. VHX aims to expand its tools for creators and improve the designer experience to support more projects coming through its pipeline. To fuel that growth it has hired a designer and plans to add more employees to build out the platform and assist creators in putting content online. The company is positioned to capture a growing trend of creators choosing direct-to-consumer distribution.
