Overview
VideoElephant aggregates premium online video content from hundreds of providers and licenses that content to web publishers. Founded in 2012 by Stephen O’Shaughnessy and based in Dublin, the company maintains offices in New York, Los Angeles, Berlin and Sydney. Its platform centralizes a library of over 2 million videos and works with content partners and publishers including Bloomberg, Fox, Al Jazeera, Endemol, Billboard, Deutsche Welle, Los Angeles Times, Hearst, USA Today, Comcast, Gannett, ByteDance and The San Francisco Chronicle. The company closed a €5.5m funding round to support growth. It plans to use the equity to almost double its global workforce across its offices and to invest in its IP and AI technology. Those investments are intended to support and scale its video library and distribution capabilities. VideoElephant aggregates and sells online video content to web publishers via a single digital marketplace, collating premium material from multiple producers, genres and categories. The company partners with ad networks and technology companies to supply video, the delivery technology and monetization under both license-fee and revenue-share models. It launched its website in 2013 with content from providers such as AFP, National Geographic, ABC, VideoJug and Press Association, later adding ITN, Maker Studios and Newsy. VideoElephant currently stocks over 100,000 short-form videos and 15,000 hours of long-form content across 15 genres. The company was founded in 2011 by CEO Stephen O’Shaughnessy and is based in Dublin, Ireland. It plans to use the new funding to support development in Dublin and to expand into New York and Los Angeles. VideoElephant is an Irish startup launching an online marketplace that sells pre-packaged professional short-form video packages to web publishers, mobile publishers and VOD/IPTV operators. At launch the site is stocked with over 50,000 videos from providers including AFP, National Geographic, ABC, VideoJug and Press Association. The platform uses a straightforward purchase-and-instant-download model, with each video sold with a worldwide, perpetual license that allows publishers to monetize content as they wish. VideoElephant differentiates itself from syndication competitors by shunning revenue-sharing models and instead takes a 30% commission on each purchase. The company contrasts its marketplace with offline agents and markets such as NAPTE and MIPCOM, which it says are prohibitively expensive and slow. Alongside the launch, VideoElephant announced it raised $1 million from ACT Venture Capital and Enterprise Ireland; the round closed in January.
