Overview
ViKi operates an international video platform that syndicates TV series, movies and other premium content with fan-generated subtitles, enabling translation into more than 150 languages. The site reports more than 10 million viewers, over 1 billion videos viewed and 150 million words translated since its public launch in December 2010. ViKi has licensing and distribution relationships with partners including Hulu and Netflix and has secured content deals with BBC Worldwide, NBC Universal, A+E Networks International, TVB, SBS, Fuji TV and Amedia. Its community of translators is central to the product, allowing rapid localization of entire series and films. The company plans to use new funding for next-phase product development, key hires and to secure additional content partnerships, and to expand its service onto multiple platforms. Leadership includes CEO and co-founder Razmig Hovaghimian and new board representation from SK Planet. ViKi is an international video site that acquires rights to TV shows and movies and relies on a volunteer community to subtitle content in more than 100 languages using ViKi’s software. The site hosts channels where content is uploaded and community members organize to subtitle new content, often within the first 24 hours. ViKi is seeing rapid traffic growth, reporting 8.5 million unique visitors and 36 million total visits in the past month—about four times last year’s traffic. To date the community has subtitled 150 million words in 160 languages, and the site features over 5,000 hours of content. ViKi has secured premium licensing deals including with BBC Worldwide, launched an international TV series on Netflix with subtitles, and is expanding content on Hulu. Investors have backed the model with a recent $4.3 million funding round from several notable backers. The company says its next stop is mobile and it is planning to expand to mobile platforms soon.
