Overview
Virdia, founded in 2007 and based in Redwood City, Calif., develops cellulosic sugars and lignin via its proprietary CASE™ process. The CASE™ process converts a wide range of cellulosic feedstocks into high‑quality fermentable sugars and lignin at low temperature with near‑complete recycling of acids and solvents. Virdia's products target renewable chemicals, second‑generation biofuels and nutrition applications, including fuels (diesel, jet fuel, ethanol, butanol), biosurfactants, lubricants, plastics, synthetic rubber, baker’s yeast and amino acids for animal feed. The company plans to establish cellulosic refineries close to sustainable biomass sources to enable low‑cost, large‑scale production. To advance piloting, engineering and scale‑up, Virdia has secured a mix of private capital, venture debt and public financing support. Management changes accompany the commercialization push, with Philippe Lavielle named CEO to lead the company's next stage of growth.
