Virent develops a patented BioForming® catalytic biorefinery platform that converts plant sugars into sustainable advanced fuels for cars, trucks, trains and aircraft. The company operates a catalytic biorefining development facility in Madison, Wisconsin, and employs 80 people. In March 2010 Virent started up a biogasoline production plant capable of generating over 10,000 gallons per year of premium biogasoline. The recent financing will be used to scale the BioForming® process to commercial production volumes. Virent has an existing R&D collaboration with Shell focused on biogasoline that is being expanded to include diesel fuel. Shell will also take a seat on Virent’s board as part of the investment.
