Virion Therapeutics is a Wistar Institute spinout immunotherapy company developing vaccines targeting certain cancers and chronic viral infections. Cofounded by Wistar Institute professor Hildegund C.J. Ertl, Andrew Luber and Bernie Rudnick, the company is advancing a lead HPV vaccine candidate and a program for chronic HBV infection. Its scientific assets have been supported by about $25 million in grants. Per an SEC filing, Virion raised a $4 million angel round. The Philly-based company will use the funds to complete an FDA Investigational New Drug (IND) filing for its lead HPV vaccine candidate and to perform preclinical work on the HBV vaccine.
