Vostu
Juana Manso, Buenos Aires, Distrito Federal, Argentina
Overview
Vostu operates six social games (including farm, poker, soccer, and role-playing titles) predominantly on Brazil’s Orkut social network and monetizes almost entirely through virtual-currency micropayments with some advertising. The company reports 20 million monthly active players, a tenfold increase from the start of the year, and says it is profitable. Vostu sells coins via prepaid scratch cards at convenience stores, SMS billing to cell phone accounts, and other local payment methods. Founded in 2007 by three Harvard classmates, the company is managed from New York City and employs more than 200 people across two game-creation studios in Buenos Aires and Sao Paulo. The article highlights rapid user growth driven by Brazil’s ~40% internet penetration (about a quarter of Brazilian internet users play Vostu games).
