Overview

Wallapop operates a consumer-facing marketplace that facilitates the reuse and resale of products, positioning itself as a leading reuse platform in Southern Europe. The company plans to continue internationalization and to capitalise on the growing market for reused products, particularly across Italy and Portugal where it has recently expanded. Wallapop closed its last fiscal year with around €91 million in revenue, a 26% increase from €71.6 million the year before, and reports a 355% revenue increase since 2019. The platform says it has grown from 170,000 users at founding to more than 19 million users today; users have given second chances to over 640 million items and the site generates roughly 100 million listings annually. Its app has accumulated more than 7.5 million downloads in Italy (with traffic growing 67% year-over-year) and more than 1 million downloads in Portugal. Founded in 2013, Wallapop aims to consolidate its leadership in the reuse market in Southern Europe. Wallapop operates a localized, consumer-focused classifieds marketplace that emphasizes reuse and the circular economy. The app pairs buyers and sellers and has added services such as Wallapop Envíos (an end-to-end shipping service) and subscription offerings for professional sellers. The company plans to invest its latest capital into operations in Spain, Italy and Portugal and into data science and R&D to improve discovery and personalization. Wallapop reported 2.4 million downloads in H1 in Italy and a 600% increase in cross-border activity between Spain and Italy in that period. For 2022 it posted €72 million in revenue, up 40% year-over-year; Wallapop Envíos revenue rose to €32 million from €17 million, and subscription revenue reached €10 million (from €6.7 million in 2020). The platform counts 15 million monthly active users and 100 million listings (aggregate over the year). Wallapop is a Barcelona-based virtual marketplace that enables people to resell used items and sell handmade crafts. The company has focused on improving its core peer-to-peer experience rather than expanding into retail, food, video, or other digital services. It has built out a shipping service called Envios to enable national deliveries; roughly 20% of goods currently move through Envios and the company plans to double down on that and related services. Wallapop reports about 15 million users, roughly half of Spain’s internet population, and has maintained a No. 4 ranking among Spain’s shopping apps. The business saw strong recovery and growth during 2020, including a 40–50% year-on-year bounce in June, trends the company says have continued into 2021. The new funding will be used to grow the infrastructure that underpins the service and expand the number of people using the platform. Wallapop is a mobile marketplace that connects buyers and sellers of second‑hand items using geolocation. Founded in October 2013 by Agustín Gómez, Gerard Olivé and Miguel Vicente, the Catalan startup operates in Spain, the UK, France, Portugal and Mexico. The platform moves more than 10 million per month in transactions and employs around 50 people. With the new funding the company plans to reinforce its presence in the markets where it is active and to expand efforts, notably toward the United States. After the round the company is reported to be valued at about €78 million. The deal is also expected to bring changes to the board with Insight Venture Partners joining.
