Wardstone is developing a novel space-based missile-defense system that counters hypersonic threats with a kinetic “particle cloud,” broadening the lethal radius versus classic millimeter-precision hit-to-kill interceptors. The company argues this approach can lift interception success rates well above the roughly 60 % achieved by legacy systems. Led by CEO Sebastian Fischer—whose résumé spans Amazon Prime Air, Cruise, Lockheed Martin, and NASA—and co-founder Tobias Fischer, formerly of Astranis, Wardstone leverages the agility of a venture-backed startup while partnering with established defense contractors for accelerated testing and deployment. Its first prototype interceptor is scheduled to ride a suborbital sounding rocket in late April, enabling high-speed, high-altitude trials without committing hardware to orbit. Rather than competing in the U.S. Space Systems Command’s prize challenges, the firm is pursuing a staged, controlled development path. Wardstone recently secured roughly $5 million in seed financing, providing runway for the upcoming prototype launch and further R&D.
