Overview
WarpStream Labs builds a cloud-native data streaming platform that runs directly on object storage and serves as a drop-in replacement for Apache Kafka. Its architecture separates compute from storage, uses object storage (e.g., S3) as the sole storage layer, and runs with a stateless compute layer to enable instant, effectively unlimited scalability. The design eliminates local disks and reduces inter-zone networking costs, which the company says often represent over 80% of total cost of ownership for large Kafka workloads. WarpStream claims its solution makes Kafka 10x cheaper and easier to use while dramatically reducing operational burden. The company has launched a “Bring Your Own Cloud (BYOC)” deployment option that combines a fully managed control plane with compute and storage in the customer’s account and is generally available. WarpStream recently raised $20M and plans to use the funds to hire engineers, scale its go-to-market team, and invest in new product lines.
