Overview
Watrix developed gait-recognition technology that can identify individuals by body shape and the way they walk, even when a face is obscured or turned away. CEO Huang Yongzhen said the system can ID people at distances of up to 50 meters. The technology is already being used by police in Beijing and Shanghai. Watrix recently picked up a $14.5 million funding round to further develop its systems. Its gait system is described as complementary to facial recognition and China’s extensive CCTV networks, improving identification in busy areas. Reporting highlights law-enforcement applications and raises concerns about potential uses against ethnic minorities, though deployment in places like Xinjiang is said to be unclear.
