Waverly Labs develops Pilot, a pair of Bluetooth earbuds focused on real-time translation; the Pilot launched at the end of last year following four years of hardware and software research. The earbuds are untethered and designed to be shareable so one person can hand a bud to another and sync it with their phone for inverse translation. Waverly says it developed its own translation software in-house while using multiple third-party sources to cross-check accuracy. In demos the translation arrived quickly, although the hardware struggled to catch all words in very loud environments. The Pilot is offered directly through Waverly’s site at $249. The company has grown via crowdfunding rather than traditional VC and operates with a roughly 20-person team in Brooklyn.
