Overview

WayUp began as an internship and job board for college students and now targets the broader entry-level workforce with a mobile-first, personalized platform. The product emphasizes custom user profiles, tailored search preferences and machine‑learning algorithms to match candidates and employers, and the company reaches job seekers via smartphone and text messaging. Employers can filter candidates by criteria such as major and GPA, and candidates may opt in to allow searches by gender and race. Employers have demonstrated willingness to pay for the service, with plans ranging from about $75 to over $500,000. The team has grown to over 50 employees and plans to use the new funding to expand engineering and product teams and potentially make acquisitions. CEO Liz Wessel has said she would like to take the company public eventually, though she considers it premature now. Campus Job operates an online marketplace that helps college students discover and apply to local part-time and full-time jobs. The platform originally focused on part-time listings and later pivoted to charge employers more for advanced search criteria to unlock applicant profiles. It has added full-time job search for seniors and counts partners including Snapchat, Zenefits, and Yelp, with employers like Dropbox, Starbucks, Postmates, T-Mobile, and Oscar hiring through the site. Usage metrics reported include more than 125,000 students from over 2,200 universities, roughly 10,000 new students signing up each week, and more than 12,000 job applications processed each month. Campus Job recently graduated from Y Combinator. Co-founder Liz Wessel said the company’s primary operational challenge is balancing the student-heavy network effect with employer acquisition. Campus Job is a marketplace that connects post-secondary students with companies seeking part-time and temporary workers, including campus reps, freelance writers, designers, and beta testers. The platform is free for students and allows businesses to post listings for free, unlocking applications for a one-time $24 fee per listing per school. Founders Liz Wessel and JJ Fliegelman built the site after graduating in 2012; Wessel previously worked at Google. Campus Job has been revenue positive from day one and its beta has served more than 7,000 post-secondary schools with students registered at almost 500 campuses. In the past three weeks businesses posted over 2,000 job listings, with more than 1,000 listings added each week. The company uses an ambassador-style growth strategy—campus reps recruit peers and local businesses—and plans to use new funding for hiring and expansion to keep pace with scale.
