Weathermob offers an iOS app that lets users report local weather in informal terms using a spinning, slot-machine-like interface of weather icons, emotive pictograms and optional photos or videos, while still showing standard temperature and forecast data. The app emphasizes social storytelling around weather and records session times averaging more than six minutes. The company reports 100,000 monthly active users across roughly 137 countries. Weathermob plans to hire additional engineers and data scientists and to launch on Android this fall. Its longer-term product strategy is to turn smartphones into mini weather stations by leveraging sensors built into devices (the Samsung Galaxy S4 is cited as an example) and to sell aggregated weather observations to companies that make forecasts and predictions. The consumer app remains free to end users. Weathermob is a mobile social network that lets anyone become a weather reporter via a free iOS app. The app mashes up real-time meteorological data with photo and video sharing so users can report and share weather from their current location. Since launching in November, the app has attracted millions of users across 128 countries, and each crowdsourced report averages 2.5 comments. Features include a home-screen snapshot of current conditions and climate, “Flurries” short weather headlines, popularity-sorted reports, search by destination, and Facebook Connect integration. Users earn points and titles for activity—top reporters can become the “Bureau Chief” for their zip code/area. The company has raised $360,000 from angel investors and will use the funding for international expansion and product development.
