WeatherXM builds a network of community-monitored weather stations that collect local ground weather information and publish it openly. The stations are monitored by volunteers who are compensated with the startup’s crypto token, $WXM. The company has deployed 5,000 weather stations in over 80 countries and makes all collected data freely accessible while offering paid commercial products for enterprise users. Founders Manolis Nikiforakis, Stratos Theodorou and Nicolas Tsiligaridis previously launched a grassroots weather app and worked as consultants to enterprise customers such as the Athens airport. WeatherXM emphasizes open source data and uses blockchain both to coordinate deployments (particularly in underserved and rural areas) and as a governance tool. The startup plans to expand its team and begin monetizing commercial users.
