266 York Way, Kings Cross, London, N7 9PQ, United Kingdom
Overview
Weengs provides a ship-from-store logistics solution that collects orders daily from retailers, professionally packs them at Weengs warehouses and ships them via partner couriers. The service targets small and medium-sized online stores, including eBay and Amazon power sellers and brick-and-mortar retailers with an e-commerce component, and handles a broad range of products from cosmetics to plants and musical instruments. The company has developed algorithms to pick the most appropriate courier based on item and customer priorities and combines automated processes with human oversight for fragile or value-added tasks. Since its seed round the team has grown to 70 people; Weengs serves around 400 retailers and has fulfilled more than 500,000 online orders to date. Founders include Alex Christodoulou and Greg Zontanos, with Pier Ronzi joining as co-founder and CEO. Weengs plans to use new funding to invest heavily in a new automated warehouse, accompanying automation and software to scale operations. The target operational capacity is to be able to fulfill more than 15,000 e-commerce orders per day. Weengs provides a smartphone app that lets sellers request pickups by photographing items, adding an address, and scheduling a collection by one of its couriers (called “Angels”). Collected items are taken to Weengs’ warehouse for professional packaging in custom-built boxes and then shipped via partners such as Royal Mail, DHL and DPD. The service charges a £5 pickup fee plus shipping rates and also captures margin from discounted bulk carrier rates. Weengs serves power eBay sellers and small boutique stores (for example, Trouva merchants) and handles international shipments and customs paperwork. The company launched in July 2015 and intends to use new funding to expand beyond London into other cities in Europe. The business notes that scale will be important to make its unit economics work.
