WeFarm

Sariyer, Istanbul, Turkey

Overview

WeFarm operates a free network where small-holder farmers can ask questions and share advice, and it has built a marketplace to connect those farmers with vetted local suppliers. The company has around 1.9 million registered users and its marketplace generated $1 million in sales in its first eight months of operations. WeFarm manages parts of the e-commerce process for regions that rely on mobile wallets, including SMS-based payments, to fulfill transactions and build trust. Longer term the company aims to enable farmer-to-farmer exchanges and let small-holding farmers sell their own produce through the platform. The service is based out of London and is led by founder and CEO Kenny Ewan. The team is focused on adding more users and services targeted to small-scale agriculture in developing economies where the platform sees the strongest activity. WeFarm provides a P2P Q&A network that connects small-scale farmers to agricultural knowledge through SMS and internet channels, using machine learning to match questions with relevant users. The service is designed for feature-phone-led regions and aims to scale across African markets. Launched in 2015 and spun out from the Cafedirect Producers’ Foundation, WeFarm has reached over 100,000 farmers in Kenya, Uganda and Peru and recorded more than 15 million pieces of shared information. It reports high engagement, with over one-third of users actively contributing knowledge each month. The company competes with services like iCow, mFarm and mShamba but differentiates via its crowdsourced P2P model. Financially, WeFarm has just closed seed funding to support its growth and expansion in Africa.
