Overview

WeFunder operates a crowdfunding platform that allows non-accredited investors to participate in startup funding. The company says it focuses on funding startups (as opposed to project-based platforms) and on backing a more diverse set of founders. Launched in 2012 by Michael Norman, Nicholas Tommarello, and Greg Belote, WeFunder has facilitated $110 million in investments through its platform. Startups on the platform have gone on to receive $2.2 billion in follow-on investments. The company reports having investors across 40 of the 50 U.S. states. Including the latest financing, WeFunder has raised a total of $15 million in equity funding to date. Wefunder operates a crowd-investing platform designed to give ordinary investors access to high-tech startup investments. In 2012 the company crowdfunded $500,000 using its own platform and was accepted into Y Combinator in Winter 2013. Since graduating from Y Combinator the company has raised equity for 13 startups totaling over $2 million from accredited investors. Wefunder says it helped write the JOBS Act and plans to enable Main Street investors to invest as little as $100 upon full adoption of the law. The company’s stated vision is to provide millions of ordinary investors access to America’s most promising startups. Green Visor Capital has invested in Wefunder and is supporting the company’s mission to democratize access to capital. Wefunder operates a crowd-investing platform that helps unaccredited investors put money into startups and encourages ongoing investor involvement beyond the funding moment. The platform requires investors to help startups with product feedback, connections, and evangelism to build long-term founder-investor relationships. Founders Mike Norman, Nick Tomarrello, and Greg Belote are MIT Sloan and Techstars alumni and helped craft the crowdfunding portion of the JOBS Act. Wefunder leverages the JOBS Act’s general solicitation rules to expand public advertising of investment opportunities. The company has also launched a Startup of the Month program to promote selected companies and guarantee a $25,000 investment plus hands-on launch support. Financially, Wefunder completed a seed raise via its own platform, attracting dozens of mostly unaccredited investors.
