Whirli operates a subscription platform where customers pay a monthly fee for "Whirli tokens" that can be used to borrow toys from its catalogue. Tokens are worth about £8 each and subscriptions range from £9.99–£29.99 per month, providing roughly 80–240 tokens; most toys cost less than 20 tokens to borrow. Borrowed toys are inspected and sterilised before being sent to new households, and any toy that remains in one home for eight months becomes permanent at no extra cost, with an option to buy toys sooner. The startup launched in 2019 and says it is currently tracking 50,000 toys in its network. Whirli positions its service as a sustainability solution to reduce toy waste and landfill from unused toys. With the new funding the company plans to expand its customer offering and continue investing in proprietary technology.
