Overview
WikiWand builds a web app and browser extension that replaces Wikipedia's default interface with a modern, more readable layout. Its interface includes full-bleed cover photos, photo galleries, a top navigation bar, a dynamic table of contents, hover link previews, easier access to article narration and audio, and a more readable font. The team created the product out of frustration with Wikipedia's decade-old interface and cites Wikipedia's massive audience (used by about half a billion people) as motivation. WikiWand is available as a browser extension for Chrome, Safari, and Firefox and can also be accessed through its website. The company plans to monetize by integrating targeted ads for textbooks, articles, and classes and says it will donate 30% of its profits to Wikipedia. It will use new funding to improve the web product and to launch iOS and Android apps.
