Overview
Wirkn operates a video-based marketplace that connects retail brands with shift-based workers, with a focus on Millennial and Generation Z candidates. The company’s platform is used by shopping-centre owners and operators, according to Flow Capital. In July 2019 Wirkn closed a financing package that included a senior secured two-year note from Flow Capital. The Flow loan was matched by an equivalent amount from equity investors and another lender. Flow Capital said the financing is intended to fuel Wirkn’s continued growth of its marketplace. The announcement did not disclose revenue, user metrics, or the size of the financing. Wirkn is a Toronto-based mobile employment solution available on iOS and Android that lets users create video profiles to showcase their personality. The app emphasizes building meaningful connections with coworkers and the larger work community, going beyond simple job matching. The company raised a $1.2 million seed round from two North American retail software figures, Howard Stotland and David Henning. This follows a $400,000 seed funding round in October of last year, and Wirkn says the new capital will be used to expand its product offerings. Wirkn also hired Todd Dean, former ALDO Vice President of Cross Channel and Ecommerce, as Chief Marketing Officer—an addition investors viewed as bringing insight into major North American retailers. The company reports over 1,000 locations actively hiring through the platform and a user base of more than 40,000 job seekers. Wirkn provides an end-to-end mobile employment solution designed to help youth find jobs and enable employers to connect with the mobile generation. Its app lets candidates locate job opportunities and apply using dynamic videos to showcase their personal brand to prospective employers. Store managers and employers can access a pool of qualified candidates on demand to fill new roles and address seasonal demand. The company is led by founder Francois Jobin, CEO Derek Szeto, and General Manager Anthony Chan, and also maintains offices in Montreal. Wirkn raised $400K in a funding round led by Kinetic Companies Inc., with participation from private angel investors, and plans to use the proceeds to launch its solution. It expects to close the next round of funding within the next 60 days.
