Overview
Wonderbly, formerly Lost My Name, builds tech-driven personalised storybooks for children and has rebranded to broaden its product range beyond its original hit. The company says its signature title has sold over 2.7 million copies. This year Wonderbly created six new products and plans further expansions and partnerships to open its platform to outside creatives. It has signed a joint-IP project with the Roald Dahl Estate to develop work tied to Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. The business emphasizes “added value over capital” and has sought strategic partners to combine creativity with scalable technology. Ravensburger’s investment brings publishing and operational experience to support Wonderbly’s growth. Lost My Name is a London-based "full-stack" publisher behind best-selling personalised picture books such as "The Little Boy/Girl Who Lost His/Her Name" and "The Incredible Intergalactic Journey Home." The company has built a bespoke e-commerce and publishing platform that personalises each story on the fly using customer data and third-party APIs, and works with global printing partners to fulfil orders on demand with zero inventory. Lost My Name controls most aspects of content creation, illustration, marketing and sales in-house, but is moving to "open up the platform" and partner with outside creatives and developers to infuse more data-driven creativity. The startup is expanding beyond books and is working on a personalised alphabet poster. Financially, Berlin-based Project A Ventures invested €4M as an extension to Lost My Name’s original $9M Series A. Project A has provided operational support in areas including business intelligence, CRM and performance marketing, and has seconded members of its operational team to help establish an in-house business intelligence unit. Florian Heinemann of Project A has joined Lost My Name’s board. Lost My Name is a London-based 'full-stack' storytelling and publishing startup best known for the personalised picture book The Little Boy/Girl Who Lost His/Her Name. It operates a bespoke e-commerce platform that provides live previews and personalises stories on the fly, and it uses global printing partners to fulfil on-demand with zero inventory. The company controls most aspects of creation, illustration, marketing and sales in-house and relies on performance marketing and word-of-mouth. Since launching as a side project in November 2012, Lost My Name has sold more than 600,000 copies in over 135 countries and is profitable. The new capital will be used to scale the business globally and to fund R&D to build a pipeline of storytelling products, including a second, more ambitious personalised book. The company said it has about 14 people working on the next book and plans to tap third-party APIs for content customisation.
