WOWIO operates an eBook marketplace and has been expanding through acquisitions. The company announced a $1.7 million private financing round to shore up its finances and pursue further acquisitions. Proceeds from the financing will be used to pay off legacy obligations and set the stage for more deals. As part of its expansion, WOWIO acquired WEvolt, a social networking platform for comic-book creators. WEvolt enables artists to create and share work and will soon allow creators to generate revenue via ad sales and merchandising. Users can submit original material for broader distribution or use the site as an aggregator of online content.
