Overview

WumDrop is an on-demand courier platform that connects customers and drivers via a mobile app, website and ecommerce checkout, born out of the WumWum diaper business. Founded by Simon Hartley and Roy Borole and launched in May 2014, the service uses a bring‑your‑own‑car revenue‑share model. The app is in beta and the company charges R7 per kilometer with a R35 minimum; WumDrop takes a 30% commission and drivers keep 70% of fares. The team is launching in Cape Town and plans to expand in incremental "rings" into the Winelands, the West Coast and then Johannesburg and Durban (starting in Sandton). Early traction includes media coverage, pitch‑competition placements (Seedstars, IBM Smartcamp, Get in the Ring) and MTN naming it Best South African Android app of 2014. Founders initially funded operations themselves while building the product.
