Xcimer Energy
10325 East 47th Avenue, Denver, CO, 80238, United States
Overview
Xcimer Energy is developing laser-driven inertial fusion technology intended to extend proven fusion science to industrial scale by building the world’s highest-energy laser system. Its laser architecture promises up to 10× higher laser energy at 10× higher efficiency and over 30× lower cost per joule than the National Ignition Facility (NIF). The company will use new financing to establish a prototype facility in Denver and build a prototype laser system that includes the world’s largest nonlinear optical pulse compression system. Xcimer plans to expand its technical team in Denver and has already hired a senior vice president of engineering to lead prototype design, development, and manufacturing. Financially, Xcimer announced a $100 million Series A and was selected for a $9 million award from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Milestone-Based Fusion Development Program in 2023. The company is a member of three DOE IFE-STAR hubs and aims to commercialize safe, reliable, zero-carbon fusion energy. Xcimer Energy is developing laser-driven inertial fusion energy with a focus on dramatically reducing laser cost to enable economical, high-yield fusion power plants. The company aims to scale hotspot ignition demonstrated at the National Ignition Facility to larger, more reliable fuel capsules and to run at repetition rates under one shot per second. Xcimer has assembled partners across U.S. national laboratories, academia, and industry to tackle engineering challenges and to adopt the HYLIFE chamber concept for long facility lifetimes. The company’s development plan targets demonstration of high fusion gain and commercial energy breakeven and the design of a Fusion Pilot Plant in the early 2030s. Xcimer received a $9 million award from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Milestone-Based Fusion Development Program and has investments from several climate-focused venture firms. Two independent economic models of Xcimer’s power plant concept project highly attractive plant-level financial metrics competitive with fossil fuels and renewables.
