XR Games is an independent Leeds-based studio focused on developing virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) games. Led by founder and CEO Bobby Thandi, the studio works with major partners and brands including Sony Pictures VR and Rovio Entertainment. Its first title, Zombieland: Headshot Fever, launched in 2021. The company plans to use new funding to grow its team, relocate to a larger city-centre studio, invest in intellectual property, develop new games, and pursue research into VR and AR technologies. Financially, XR Games raised £5.9m in its latest round and previously raised £1m, £1.5m (2019) and a further £1.5m (2021) in earlier financings. The studio has tripled headcount in less than a year to more than 85 employees and in March acquired specialist VR developer Fierce Kaiju to expand its portfolio. New hires include senior personnel such as a chief operating officer, a creative director, and a head of production, alongside expanded development, game design, and art teams. The studio has collaborated with brands including Sony Pictures Virtual Reality and Rovio Entertainment and released The Angry Birds Movie 2 VR: Under Pressure to critical acclaim. The team includes non-executive director Jason McGann, a veteran co-founder of Rockstar Leeds. The company plans to use new funding to grow its Leeds team, invest in development, and expand its games portfolio through projects with Hollywood film studios and major media and entertainment companies. XR Games is also set to begin several strategic partnerships, including one with an LA-based production company. In November 2019 the studio secured new capital to support these plans. In conjunction with the round, Jane Whittaker — who previously managed the VR team at Atari and worked on the VR version of Alien VS Predator for the Atari Jaguar — joined the board and executive team as Chief Hopping Officer.
