Overview

Yan Engines, incorporated in 2006 by Dr. MJ Yan (PhD, Princeton University), invented the Differential Stroke Cycle (D-Cycle) engine, which requires only component-level changes to existing four-stroke engines to deliver fuel-efficiency and performance improvements. The company is using the Ford EcoBoost engine—used in the Ford Focus, Fiesta and Mondeo—as a platform for its technology. Yan Engines is building and testing its engines with the US military and several other commercial applications. It recently raised an additional $700k and will use the funds to focus on smaller automotive engines. The company has opened a UK subsidiary to concentrate on applying the technology to passenger vehicles and smaller automotive engines. Yan Engines graduated from the University of Texas’ Austin Technology Incubator (ATI) and has raised nearly $5m in total funding. The company was incorporated in 2006 by inventor Dr. MJ Yan and built its first engine in Taiwan before relocating operations to Austin, TX in Fall 2011. Yan Engines joined ATI’s Clean Energy Incubator after the move and has since graduated from the program. It is working to build and test engines with the US military and pursue several commercial fleet-retrofit applications. The company is also exploring fuel-economy gains for power‑generation engines, particularly diesel generators used in smaller municipalities in Asia.
