Overview
YesVideo, founded in 1999, converts analog video formats like VHS and 8mm into digital files and distributes content online and on DVD. With its new Legacy Republic brand, the company is expanding into photo digitization in addition to video. Legacy Republic recruits and trains independent contractors called Legacy Makers who use company-provided iPad apps to perform digitization work and split proceeds with YesVideo. The company estimates there are roughly two billion non-digital videos and photo albums stored by US households and says physical media is deteriorating quickly. YesVideo has been beta testing the program with about 20 Legacy Makers for the past nine months. The company is financing the initiative with a $6 million commitment from YesVideo rather than an external equity round. YesVideo, founded in 1999, digitizes personal videos from legacy formats such as VHS and 8mm film, returning customers' originals after conversion. The company stores converted content online and on DVD, and says the conversion process takes less than three weeks. YesVideo reports it has served about 7 million customers and operates a facility in Santa Clara. Leadership sees a large addressable market — an estimated 1 to 1.5 billion units of personal video remain to be converted — and argues demand will grow as media degrades. The company is moving beyond basic digitization toward cloud-based sharing products to enable posting to Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, and is exploring a future app for watching longer-form personal content. YesVideo’s strategy centers on converting legacy media and then monetizing and distributing that content via online and social channels.
